Who Prepares the Customer Quotation?
You price it, we write it. Your scope and trade-rate figure become a professional quotation that names you as the appointed main contractor, and we follow it up.
The short answer
You price the job. We write, issue and follow up the quotation.
After the site visit, you put your quote together at trade rate, covering the scope and the price, and send it to us. We turn it into a professional written quotation, add our fee on top, name you as the appointed main contractor and issue it to the customer. Then we follow it up until the customer decides.
The technical content is yours and the presentation is ours. Here is how that works and why it tends to win more work than a price sent by text.
Step by step
From survey to accepted quotation
You survey the job
At the visit we booked, you assess what's needed and decide how you'd carry it out.
You price it at trade rate
Set out the scope and your figure. It doesn't need to be polished, it needs to be accurate. See what rates do you expect?
You send it to us
On smaller jobs such as repairs and rooflights, we aim for your price within about 48 hours. Larger jobs can take longer, provided you tell us.
We prepare the quotation
We turn your price into a professional quotation under the Mortaro template and add our fee on top of your figure.
We issue it, naming you
The customer receives it with you named as the appointed main contractor, so they know exactly who will carry out the work before they commit.
We follow it up
We chase the decision and answer the customer's questions about the process. When they accept, we collect the deposit and organise the start date.

Why it helps
A properly set quotation wins more work
Plenty of good contractors lose jobs they should have won because the price arrived as a few lines in a message, a week late, and nobody followed it up. The customer compares that with a clear written document and draws conclusions about the work itself.
Presentation is not a substitute for a fair price, but it does decide whether a fair price gets a fair hearing. A customer weighing up a significant job wants to see that it has been thought through.
Through us, every price you submit reaches the customer in the same professional format, with the scope set out, the appointed contractor named and the terms clear. Customers are told the quotation is valid for 30 days, and someone follows it up while you're getting on with other jobs.
Turnaround matters too. The expectations are set out in quote turnaround expectations and, briefly, in how quickly must I quote?
We don't set the technical scope of your work. If something in your price is unclear, we'll ask you rather than guess, because the quotation has to reflect what you will actually do. Your trade rate is paid in full; our fee sits on top. The mechanism is explained in trade rates explained.
What to send us
A price we can turn into a strong quotation
It doesn't need to be formatted. It does need to be clear and complete.
The scope
What you will do, in plain terms. The customer should be able to read it and recognise their job.
Materials and method
What you plan to use and how, in enough detail for the customer to understand what they are paying for.
Your trade-rate figure
One clear price for the work, or clearly separated options if the customer asked for alternatives.
What isn't included
Anything the customer might assume is covered but isn't. Stating it now avoids a difficult conversation later.
Your warranty terms
The workmanship warranty you provide on this job. It is confirmed in the customer's quotation.
Timing
Roughly how long the work will take on site, so we can organise the start date sensibly.
After acceptance
What happens once the customer says yes
Acceptance is where the quotation turns into a job. We collect the 25% deposit from the customer and pass it to you without unnecessary delay, then agree a start date with the customer around your schedule.
From that point you know when you are starting and that the deposit has been paid. While you carry out the work, we stay in touch with the customer, and on completion we collect the balance and pass it on promptly.
Straight answers
Quotation questions
Do I need my own quotation template?
No. Send us your scope and price in whatever clear form suits you. We produce the customer-facing document.
Who chases the customer after the quote goes out?
We do. Following up is part of what we handle, along with the rest of the customer communication. More on the contractor network hub.
Will the customer know I'm doing the work before they accept?
Yes. The quotation names you as the appointed main contractor, so the customer knows exactly who is carrying out the work before they commit.
