What Happens After I Apply?

A person reads your enquiry. If it looks like a fit, we send the full application, talk through areas, rates and standards, and complete the checks before any introduction.

The short answer

A person reads your enquiry. If it looks like a fit, we send the full application and talk it through with you.

Joining is invite-led, so the first step is an enquiry, not an application form. Someone at Mortaro reads what you send. If your trade and area look like a fit, we send you the full application and talk through the areas you cover, how you price and the standards we work to. The checks are completed before you're introduced to any customer, and only then does work start to come through.

We don't publish a timescale for each stage, because it depends on how quickly your details come back and whether we coordinate work where you are. What we can give you is the order things happen in.

The sequence

From enquiry to your first introduction

  1. You send an enquiry

Tell us about your business: your trade, where you work, how long you've been trading. How do I join the network? covers what's worth including.

  2. A person reads it

Not an automated filter. We look at whether your trade and area fit the work we coordinate.

  3. If it's a fit, we send the full application

This is where you give us the detail the checks rely on.

  4. We talk through areas, rates and standards

Where you can cover reliably, how pricing at trade rate works, and what we expect on replies, quotes and site visits.

  5. We complete the checks

All five, before any introduction to a customer. They are listed further down this page.

  6. You're introduced to customers

When an opportunity suits you, we offer it. You accept or decline, and if you accept we book the site visit.

The conversation

What we talk through before you start

We talk before anything is formalised because the fit has to work both ways. You should know exactly what the arrangement asks of you before you commit time to the paperwork, and we would rather both sides learn early if something won't suit.

Areas. Where you can realistically reach for a site visit and for the work itself. Our work is UK-wide and coverage is confirmed postcode by postcode. See which areas can I cover?

Rates. You price at trade rate. Our fee is added on top in the customer's quotation, and you're paid your rate in full. What rates do you expect? goes into it.

Standards. A same-day reply to a new opportunity, ideally within about two hours. Quotes on smaller jobs aimed within about 48 hours. Attending the site visits you accept. Putting defective work right. What we need from contractors sets them out in full.

The checks

What is checked, and what helps to have ready

Every contractor goes through the same checks before any introduction. What documents do I need? has the detail.

Checked before introduction

  • Public liability insurance
  • Reviews and references
  • The warranties or guarantees you provide
  • Trade experience and prior work history
  • Your ability to meet our standards

Worth having to hand

  • Your current public liability insurance details
  • Where customers have reviewed you
  • Contact details for references
  • The terms of the workmanship warranty you give
  • Examples of work you have completed

After the checks

Your first site visit matters most

Anyone looks good on paper. The first booked appointment is where we learn how you actually work, which is why a contractor who misses their first site visit without good reason or communication is removed. Turn up, or tell us early if you can't, and it will never come to that.

Before that visit, we will have booked it around your availability and the customer's, and told the customer who is coming. You arrive at a confirmed appointment with a customer who is expecting you, which is a very different start from cold-calling a phone number.

After that, trust builds job by job. Established contractors with a good record are given latitude for the occasional reschedule, because they communicate. The wider picture of onboarding is in contractor onboarding and vetting, and the whole arrangement is on the Work with Mortaro page.

Why the checks come first

Customers are told their contractor has been through specific checks before they meet them. That can only be true if the checks happen before introduction, never after. They reduce risk rather than remove it, which is why the standards carry on once you're working.

Straight answers

After your enquiry

How long does it take?

It depends on how quickly the application and your details come back and whether we coordinate work in your area. We don't put a fixed timescale on it.

Does it cost anything to apply?

No. Joining is free: no membership, no subscription, no joining fee and no charge per lead.

What if my trade or area isn't a fit right now?

Then we won't send the full application. That usually reflects the work we're coordinating at the time rather than a view on your work.

Are DBS checks part of it?

No. The five checks are the ones listed above: insurance, reviews and references, warranties, trade experience and work history, and your ability to meet our standards.

For contractors

Tell us about your business

Your trade, the areas you cover and the size of work you take on. A person reads every enquiry, and if it looks like a fit we will send you the full application.
