How Do I Get Work Through Mortaro?

You join the network, we generate and qualify the enquiry, and we appoint you to it. You survey and price; we handle the quotation, the customer and the payments.

The short answer

Join the network, respond well, and we bring the work to you.

You get work through Mortaro by being in our network and being appointed to enquiries in your area and trade. We generate the enquiry, qualify the customer, offer the job to you, book the site visit and turn your trade-rate price into a professional quotation. If the customer accepts, we collect the deposit, organise the start date and pass the payments to you.

How much comes your way depends on three things: your area, your trade and your track record with us. The first two are fixed. The third is entirely in your hands.

From enquiry to payment

How a job reaches you

The same sequence for every opportunity, whatever the size of the job.

  1. We generate and qualify the enquiry

The customer comes to us. We speak to them, understand what they need and check it is a genuine job before anything reaches you.

  2. We offer it to you

One contractor is appointed per enquiry. You are told what the job is and where, and asked to accept or decline. Aim to reply the same day, ideally within about two hours. The detail is in contractor response time standards.

  3. We book the site visit

We arrange a time that works for you and the customer, confirm it with both of you and tell the customer who is coming.

  4. You survey and price

You attend, assess the job, set the scope and put your quote together at trade rate. Then you send it to us.

  5. We prepare and issue the quotation

We turn your price into a professional quotation naming you as the appointed main contractor, add our fee on top, issue it and follow it up. See who writes the quotation?

  6. The customer accepts

We collect the 25% deposit and pass it to you without unnecessary delay, then organise the start date with the customer.

  7. You carry out the work

While you're on the tools, we keep the customer updated and handle their questions, escalating anything that needs you.

  8. We collect the balance

On completion we collect the final payment and pass it on promptly. How that works is set out in how do payments work?

What decides your share

Track record earns more opportunities

Work is not handed out evenly or at random. Contractors who respond quickly, communicate clearly, deal professionally with customers and complete jobs well receive more opportunities over time. How are jobs allocated? covers the detail.

We won't promise you a volume. Demand varies by area and by trade, and anyone who promises a steady stream from the first week is telling you what you want to hear. What we can say is that reliability is rewarded, and that the aim in each area is one or two dependable contractors taking most of the work. Before any of this: joining

Joining is invite-led. It starts with a short enquiry telling us about your business. A person reads it, and if it looks like a fit we send the full application and talk through your areas, rates and standards. Our checks are completed before you are introduced to any customer. The steps are laid out in how do I join the network?

Your first opportunities

What the early jobs look like

The first opportunity arrives like every other: the type of job, the location, and a request to accept or decline. Reply the same day. If the timing or the job doesn't suit, say no; that is a perfectly good answer and it lets us move the customer on.

If you accept, we book the visit and confirm it with you. Attend it. The first booked visit carries more weight than anything else in your early record, and missing it without good reason or a word ends the arrangement.

After the survey, get your price back to us promptly. On smaller jobs such as repairs and rooflights we aim for about 48 hours. On bigger work, take the time you need to price it accurately and tell us roughly when to expect it.

From there, the pattern repeats. Each job answered promptly, attended, priced and completed properly adds to your record, and your record is what brings the next opportunity your way.

Straight answers

Getting work: common questions

Do I have to accept every job I'm offered?

No. Declining is fine and carries no penalty. What counts against you is not replying at all.

How soon after joining will I be offered work?

It depends on your area, your trade and what enquiries come in. We don't give a timescale because we can't honestly promise one. What happens after I apply? covers the joining stage.

Will I be competing with other contractors for the same job?

Not through us. We appoint one contractor per enquiry and never share it. More on the contractor network hub.
